Fun language tidbits
Ah, randomness. A favorite of the average ADHDer. Today I bring you a little bit of that on one of my past times: hyper specific facts about dead languages and/or word etymology. I have no intention of deep diving or learning (academically speaking) any of this, but I love stumbling upon these random facts and showing it to my more advanced students.
In this YouTube video by Language Learners' Club, we learn what Iberic romance languages (Portuguese and Spanish) have in common with English when it comes to their present-day word for what I call a big angry duck (goose).
And in this Substack blog post by Colin Gorrie, you can take a trip down the history of written English by following a short story about a man's trip to a small English village. I could read more or less okay until the 1500s, tell me where you guys got lost too! This one I found in ritual's blog.
